SPOTLIGHT

Jan De Cock — Lightbox (Randschade period)

Year: early 2000s

Jan De Cock is today one of Belgium’s most discussed artists, but his early work was remarkably clear in its ambition: to show how architecture quietly dictates how we move, look, and exist in space.

A key moment from that period was his intervention in a sheep barn during the 2001 Kunstenfestival Watou, part of the Randschade series. Using simple construction materials such as plywood, De Cock inserted new architectural structures into existing spaces, subtly controlling the viewer’s movement and perception.

The lightbox we are presenting dates from this same early period and is built from the very materials that defined those interventions. It is made of the same material and carries the same architectural logic in a more compact form — almost like a fragment of those spatial constructions translated into an object.

Works from the Randschade period mark the beginning of De Cock’s international trajectory, which makes this piece particularly meaningful within his oeuvre.

Even more compelling: it is offered at a very attractive price for such an early and emblematic work.
